Breaking News: Mikel, Robben, and Skrtel Injury Updates

June 5, 2010
  • Despite given clearance to join the Nigeria squad yesterday, midfielder John Obi Mikel ruled himself out of the tournament because of a knee injury. Nigeria will look to replace his midfielder role in the starting XI and in the 23-man roster.
  • The Netherlands’s Arjen Robben scored two goals in a 6-1 rout of Hungary, but suffered a suspected hamstring injury and has been taken to the hospital for extensive tests. He will not be traveling with the squad on Sunday and his available for the tournament is not yet known. If he’s ruled out, look for some combination of wingers Eljero Elia, Ryan Babel, and Ibrahim Afellay and attacking midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart to fill his void in the starting XI.
  • In a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica, Slovakia defender Martin Skrtel suffered an ankle injury and was taken to the hospital. Like the Netherland’s Robben, his status for the tournament is in doubt.
  • For those of you scoring at home, Mikel became the fourth Chelsea FC player to miss the tournament, adding to a list that already included Portugal’s Jose Bosingwa, Ghana’s Michael Essien, Germany’s Michael Ballack, and might soon include the Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba, depending on his recovery from injury.

The less Chelsea representatives at the World Cup the better, I say.
