Breaking News: Drogba, Ferdinand, and Altidore Injury Updates

June 4, 2010
  • Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba, originally ruled out of the World Cup, will undergo surgery on his fractured elbow and could be fit for the first group match vs Portugal, according to his agent.
  • England captain Rio Ferdinand ruled out of World Cup with a left knee injury. Look for Ledley King to replace Ferdinand in the starting line-up at center-back. Steven Gerrard will don the captain’s armband while center-back Michael Dawson has been called up as a replacement in the 23-man squad.
  • Also, Italy’s Andrea Pirlo picked up a calf injury during Italy’s friendly against Mexico yesterday. He will still be traveling to South Africa with the squad, but looks set to miss Italy’s first two group matches.
  • United States’s Jozy Altidore expected to be healthy for June 12 opener vs England following a sprained right ankle Wednesday during training.
  • In case you have missed it, here’s a full recap of prominent stars missing out and who may yet miss out on this year’s tournament.
